Discussed the "would you rather a run into a bear or a man when alone in the woods" question with my friend who is a black bear technician, and I have a lot of experience working in remote areas with a high black bear population myself. She and I both were instantly in agreement that: 1. If I'm in the woods deep in bear country, the bear is simply much more expected and less startling to run into than the man. It would be something we are prepared for and fully unsurprised by. 2. Bear safety is pretty straightforward, we know and have training in their behaviour, how to avoid conflict, what a black bear that is trying to hunt you looks like, and how to maximize your chances of getting out of the situation safely in the incredibly rare case of an attack. There's no equivalent handy step by step guide to respond to a dude attack.
Most people approach the question as a feminist one, thinking more about risk of violence from a man, but neither of us really even expressed much concern about the dude beyond knowing from experience that it is startling and unsettling to run into someone when in a remote wooded area far from any trails or residences. As two animal autistics that studied wildlife management in college and have spent a lot of time in the woods of northern Ontario, we both missed the intended point of the debate, instead coming to a stance solidly rooted in "why would be I be upset to see a bear when I'm knowingly in the bear's home?"
#It startled me the one single time I saw a stranger in my piece while tree planting deep in the boreal forest#On the other hand I never felt any fear or alarm in the near daily instances of seeing bears#They don't want to fuck with me beyond maybe stealing my lunch from the cache or ripping into the seedling boxes because they smell funny#Exercise caution in bear country but don't waste your time and mental energy being afraid. The worst case scenario is incredibly unlikely#ESPECIALLY if you aren't near a town or park so they aren't habituated to humans. It is bears used to people to be more worried about

(Looking through my friend's seed collection for things i want to plant this year)
(Stops on a flower packet)
Oh... this one kinda reminds me of yakumo ☺️...
(Pause.)
I, someone who has never liked flowers, grimacing at myself: what the fuckkindabullshit
#considering that a YEAR ago while planning my garden#my friends kept trying to convince me to plant flowers#and i shot them down instantly#why would i waste energy growing something that i won't be able to eat? i said#flowers? useless to me. cut flowers? even more offensive#show up at my house with a bouquet of burgers or i'm kicking you back into the streets#sPECIFICCALYL his fateful aegis outfit came to mind and i wanted to wither on the spot#this man's got me admiring the beauty of nature for aesthetic and spiritual purposes or somshit#i need to go put myself in a headlock. maybe punch myself for a while. brb

You know what I think is so....there's such a pseudo respect for science on this website specifically but - just like in many societies generally - only when it speaks with authority. And yeah, the scientific method is how we're trying to find out truth about things, so we can base our decisions on this truth. At one point - you're gonna have to speak with some authority based on the research that has been done. But. So many people - in society and on this website - have not studied to become scientists. They have not learned about the scientific method. So all they see is apparently - science as authority. But science as authority is a consensus. 'Consensus' reached by multiple individual scientists who are no longer in major disagreement because so much research has been done that it SEEMS LIKE we're on to something. And yet, even then, everything may turn out to be wrong. Because people have been fabricating results for example (happened really seriously within the field of psychology) or because it turned out that most studies' methods or assumptions were less rigorous or accurate than desirable (lookin askance at economics) or the classic paradigm shift in physics where some whole new set of ideas topples earlier ones. It seems like we've reached a pretty solid idea of things. But when is that point? Very few people have been taught to recognise it. Which requires actually reading/scanning studies. Or at least good summaries. Getting a sense of what the landscape of ideas is. What are major theories and assumptions and results? (In uni, you get handed this in a course). More importantly, what is missing?? Once you go digging into any subject it generally turns out there's more gaps in understanding and especially empirical results WITH good methods than what's actually known. In uni, you're taught to recognise how researchers might have fucked up (at least, they attempt to teach this). What's solid stuff? What's rigorous research? What is valid and reliable? When is something TRUE? Here comes my personal opinion: if there's not 3- 10 citations behind a statement then you're knitting a web of maybes together. Actually it's NOT just my personal opinion, it's a major problem in scholarship and science that scientists are NOT reproducing studies because they are not rewarded for it - when the scientific method REQUIRES reproduction of results for any kind of robust 'truth' to emerge.
But most people are simply 100% not taught about HOW our societies make truth (emerge) - or rather how scientists should be doing this. They are delivered truth by the authority: science. But the nature of the scientific process delivers differing narratives, theories, hypotheses, especially until a kind of consensus is reached. So people take one study and run with it. Or 7 wildly differing studies which seem to be about the same thing but really aren't. And that's not even non-uni-educated people only, I've seen plenty of paper-publishing people knit their stuff together that way. Sometimes that's all the information there is! But though scientists are taught to point to the sources of information for statements they make - that doesn't mean that everything published is Fact. Most discussions of results would acknowledge this strenuously. Still, they're often cited that way if it suits the narrative of the paper pointing at them.
My point? Wish people would be MORE skeptical of 'science'. What? I hear you ask? More crazies who don't listen to reason? No - I just wish more people would have access to and the means to and the desire to and have respect for doing one's own research with the scientific method as FALLIBLE BUT ENDLESSLY SELF- ADJUSTING TRUTH-SEEKING MECHANISM in the backs of their minds. Which means reading. Literally just means reading, and staying critical, and recognising when things are not nearly ready to be called TRUTH yet at all and when things ARE ready to be called TRUTH (looking at climate change and its human causes and the major consensus on this).
What I mean is - again - wish people would actually read studies. Wish this was a thing taught to every child in secondary school. Otherwise you get people pointing at 30 studies about completely different arguments / completely different scope that lead back to about three studies of actual results eventually which didn't have amazing methods. And that's TRUTH and anyone who denied this Substantiated Common Sense is a moral idiot. Maybe let's do some rigorous testing first and then some pilots.
#genuinely dont think that the major truth -seeking process should be comprehensibly taught to only those people who might#do research in the future. should be taught to every citizen.#my stuff#personal#do i think that after having researched nuclear power plants four times 'superficially' i know whether its good or bad to invest in?#no#maybe the risks are overstated or maybe the risk is minimal and worth it maybe waste CAN be managed well despite historical#problems. maybe the risk of a huge national security risk and international health risK REALLY IS worth it BECAUSE#tech HAS developed enough and responsibility risks can be prevented eniugh that emissionless energy output for 30 years will be essential#do i know? no. and obviously im skeptical#but i never deny that there is a possibility i just need to get a clearer picture by actually looking at some actual literature#maybe its gonna save the damn world! who knows#not me#people r so bad at not knowing

so i saw u had unicorn ocs, are any of ur other ocs magic users?
OOH-HOO, Boy can I get into this.
Well, we’ll start off with with Reva and Vera.
Since they’re unicorns, magic is basically embedded into their systems. It comes naturally to them, even if they can’t control it. They can learn more to do with it, but I’d say for the two of them, it’s more of a matter of emotional control and manipulation. {This is the same for vampires, seafolk and angels. Angels have regenerative abilities, seafolk have their water manipulation, and vampires can vary depending on their place of origin.}
Then there’s Lucetta and Armen. They’re more skill with their magic use, each of them having about 10 years of training under their belts. {Armen has been practicing for a shorter period of time if you count the few months where his sister was grinding away at her studies, but he’s grown used to it as well.} They were both about 15 when they started training, they were both self-taught. They specialize in different studies, however. Armen focuses more on illusions, while Lucetta practices enchantments and plant manipulation. {Lucetta also tutors Blanc in plant studies.}
We also have the demons such as Percy, Lilliahne and Gothel, where, similar to Reva and Vera, magic is a part of their bodies natural system. Lilliahne, for example, has control over any light source she may come across. Her body naturally creates its own electricity and light to add on to that as well. Percy is something I can’t disclose yet, but he’s definitely some form of magic. Gothel is just a fucking cunt who sets shit on fire. He’s just a walking lighter if I’m totally fair.
Also, I can’t forget people like Elvira. She can manipulate time and is basically proving the term ‘fuck around and find out’. {She can and will tell you if you’re about to do dumb shit that’ll result in severe consequences, unless she feels you deserve to learn/has a grudge against you.}
All together, magic is not limited. I could go into more details but this post would be a god damn novel if I did. So this is all I’m gonna say. You’ll definitely see it progress as the story progresses, but I’d say this is all I’m explaining.
Over all, I’d say magic is definitely very prominent.
#Elvira doesn’t hold grudges often#she feels that arguments and fighting are futile and only result in wasted energy and potential#honestly if she starts hating someone they probably did some horrible shit#like worse than anything she could ever do to them#but she’s normally one to just brush it off.#she has set gothel on fire for eating her plants before#so maybe that was a teeny bit under exaggerated

Residents protest plan to set up incinerator plant in Kodungaiyur
Residents of north Chennai, along with civil society organisations, on Tuesday filed a formal complaint with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), urging the cancellation of a proposed waste-to-energy (WTE) incinerator plant in Kodungaiyur. The plant, intended to burn 2,100 tonnes of mixed garbage daily, is facing intense opposition due to concern over its potential health and…

ppl need to stop equating being messy with being unhealthy
#messiness =/= unhealthiness ok#its messy to have pieces of paper all over the place#its unhealthy to have moldy trash all over the place#THERE. IS. A. DIFFERENCE. *slams fist on table* DAMMIT!#one produces bacteria or fungi and attracts bugs#ones just fucking. paper.#i'm extremely passionate about this.#as a likely autistic kid being told these sorts of things were the same it made me rebellious bc no matter how much ppl tried to#tell me it was the same my brain still knew they were somehow different.#if you're like 'clean that up' and I ask why. you need to give me a good reason why otherwise my brain registers it as something#that will just waste my energy I could be using more productively#and also I knew that paper isnt dangerous and isnt gonna kill me with fungus or bacteria or whatever#but the hammering in became sort of effective at a point bc I started to think they were the same which only made me burnt out#and give up (and for other reasons but thats a story for another day) and instead of seeing clearly like I did before anyone tried to#convince me I wasnt seeing clearly- I just thought of it all as the same. but it's not! some things hold more priority over others. but no#one taught me this. they just told me to clean and then never showed me how or why I should. so I became rebellious bc unfortunately#'because I said so' isnt a very convincing argument for someone w autism lol.#so now i'm having to teach myself how to clean basically from the bottom up and I've had to realize that some things are more important#than others. and im so upset and angry that I was convinced it was all the same when I already knew before it wasnt#just bc i'd be yelled at otherwise#but no- bacteria producing. bug attracting. fungus making things take priority over everything else and i'm not about to let#anyone convince me my space is equally as gross if all I have is paper and empty water bottles everywhere. fuck off.#i do not care about aesthetics. and caring about mess means caring about aesthetics.#any yknow what else is messy? plants in nature. disorganized. inconsistent. growing all over the place. and I think that's beautiful#so personally I dont see the point in getting upset over mess.#I understand getting upset over things that are unhealthy- but not messiness. life is messy and always will be.

I watch a ton of great youtube videos about halting and reversing desertification but now youtube recommends me a ton of videos of people using those techniques to turn desert ecosystems into farmland. If you see these too, please downvote them. Going to desert ecosystems and planting food forests is not a trend we should be starting. Many plants and animals are endemic to those areas and those ecosystems are worth protecting. Deserts are not wastelands. These videos mislead people into thinking that this is a good thing for the environment just because there is more green. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are so many actual forest ecosystems that need to be restored, we should not be wasting energy foresting deserts that have been deserts for millennia.
